On February 27, 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile, with the epicenter located near Concepción, the country's second-largest city. The seismic waves from the earthquake triggered icequakes in Antarctica, causing ice sheets to fracture. The earthquake also generated at least ten tsunamis, with the highest waves reaching up to 9 feet (approximately 2.7432 meters). The disaster resulted in the loss of 525 lives.
